What is a Specialist High Skills Major? 

The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program is an Ontario Ministry of Education initiative designed to help students develop specialized skills in various career areas while in high school. SHSM students earn a RED SEAL Diploma, giving them extra recognition among high school graduates

This additional qualification is recognized throughout the postsecondary pathways across the province. At NHS, the SHSM program has foci in the:

 

Who is it for? 

Grade 11 & 12 students in ANY pathway (apprenticeship, college, university or workplace) who are interested in exploring a field of study related to the Business, Construction or Health and Wellness sectors.

 

What is required?

There are 5 required components:

  • A bundle of eight to ten Grade 11 and Grade 12 credits, including Co-operative Education credits
  • Sector-recognized certifications and training courses
  • Experiential learning activities within the sector
  • “Reach ahead” experiences in the student’s post-secondary destination of choice
  • Use of the Ontario Skills Passport (OSP) to document development of essential skills and work habits
